Created to Climb
About Created to Climb
Guided Appalachian Trail adventures that grow youth into confident, capable young people.
Created to Climb treks are open to youth and young adults alike, including YSA, and really anyone ready to lace up and lean in. Whatever your starting point, there is a place for you on the trail.
Created to Climb exists for one reason: to give youth an experience that changes how they see themselves. On the ridgelines of the southern Appalachians, with a pack on their shoulders and a river ahead of them, kids discover a version of themselves that a screen never showed them.
We design each trip around the belief that adventure is one of the best teachers a young person can have. Every mile of the Appalachian Trail, every night under the stars near a trail shelter, and every rapid on the Nantahala is an invitation to grow. Explore our guides for parents and youth or meet the people who lead our trips.
Our Mission
Why we take youth to the Appalachian Trail
The youth years are the perfect time to be stretched in the right way. On trail, youth trade notifications for birdsong, algorithms for topo maps, and the pressure to perform online for the simple, honest work of climbing the next hill.
We believe the Appalachian Trail does four things for young people better than almost anywhere else. It builds confidence, because finishing a hard day earns a pride no shortcut can. It reconnects them with nature, from the rhododendron tunnels of the Nantahala Gorge to the spruce-fir summit of Clingmans Dome. It gives them a genuine break from devices, unplugging in a way that actually sticks. And it forges friendship, because there is no faster way to bond than sharing a summit, a campfire, and a river with the same small group of people.
What Makes Us Different
Safety-first, small groups, certified guides
Adventure and safety are not opposites at Created to Climb, they are partners. Every trip is led by certified guides trained as Wilderness First Responders, and we keep our group sizes small so no youth ever gets lost in the crowd. That low guide-to-camper ratio means real mentorship, personal encouragement, and a watchful eye on the trail and the water.
We carry the gear, plan the meals, and manage the logistics so families never have to. Backpacks, tents, sleeping systems, rafts, helmets, and PFDs are all provided and maintained to standard. Parents get clear communication before and during each trip, detailed packing lists, and the peace of mind that comes from an experienced team who has hiked these ridgelines and run these rivers many times before.
The Terrain We Love
The southern Appalachians, up close
We run our trips in one of the most beautiful stretches of the entire Appalachian Trail: western North Carolina and the edge of Tennessee. Our youth follow the white blazes across AT ridgelines, camp near classic trail shelters, cross the dam at Fontana Lake, and hike beneath the old-growth canopy of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Then they cool off on the whitewater of the Nantahala River, where the gorge walls rise straight out of cold, clear water.
It is a landscape built for growth: challenging enough to matter, welcoming enough for a first-timer, and stunning enough to stay with a youth for the rest of their life.
