Packing List & Trek Prep
Everything you need for a week on the trail, in one place.
Meals are planned and provided, so this list covers your personal gear and clothing. Print it, check off each item, and bring it to your pre-trip gear shakedown. When in doubt, pack lighter, not heavier.
Before you come (required)
- Complete a preparatory hike of at least 10 miles carrying a full pack, signed off by a parent or leader
- Break in your boots on your training hikes
- Pass a gear shakedown with your leader before departure
- Leave all electronics at home, including the drive up and back
Pack & shelter
- Backpacking pack, roughly 50 to 65 liters, with a rain cover
- Sleeping bag rated for the season's overnight lows
- Sleeping pad
- Tent or shelter (confirm with your group who carries what)
Footwear & socks
- Broken-in hiking boots or trail shoes (no minimalist or "five-finger" shoes)
- 3 to 4 pairs of wool or synthetic hiking socks
- Camp shoes or sandals (optional)
Clothing (no cotton)
- 2 moisture-wicking shirts, synthetic or merino wool
- 1 to 2 pairs of hiking shorts or pants
- Insulating layer, fleece or a puffy
- Rain jacket
- Warm hat and gloves for spring and fall trips
- Sun hat or cap
- Underwear, synthetic or wool
- Dry sleep clothes
Water & hydration
- 2 to 3 liters of water capacity, bottles or a reservoir
- One extra water bottle, water can be scarce on some stretches
- Personal water treatment, drops or a filter, if your leader directs
Camp & kitchen
- Headlamp with spare batteries
- Spork or eating utensil
- Lightweight bowl or mug
- Lighter or matches
Personal & first aid
- Toothbrush and travel toiletries
- Blister care and any personal medications
- Sunscreen and lip balm
- Insect repellent
- Small quick-dry towel
- Trowel and toilet paper (confirm with your group)
- Pocket scriptures or a study journal (no devices)
Nice to have
- Trekking poles
- Journal and pen
- A small dedicated camera, remember the no-phone rule
